Message of the Sparrow – Symbolic Meaning of Sparrows

sparrowAll too often we take the sparrow for granted – small though she may be, she is certainly powerful.  It is her slightness in size that gives her advantages.  She reminds us we do not have to have the big stuff (cars, house, etc.) to be important, and we do not have to have the loudest voice in order be heard.

Some symbolic meaning of Sparrows include:

  • creativity
  • simplicity
  • joy
  • protection
  • friendliness
  • community
  • productivity

Sparrows derive power from their numbers.  Always in a clan, they move in clusters, eat in clusters, and are always content as such.  This can be quite intimidating to some would-be predators.  Safety in numbers is a lesson the sparrow has to share with us.

The sparrow is vigilant in her goals.  She is always bustling for her food, foraging for her nests, and gathering for her young.  Fastidious and productive, the sparrow is a reminder that idle hands (and idle minds) should be avoided in order to live a full, healthy life.

She is a master of flight, and camouflage, and as such the sparrow teaches us to use our creativity to get around in life – think outside the box, and be creative in solving our problems.

As an air animal totem, the sparrow speaks of higher thoughts and ideals.  She beckons us to keep our burdens as light as we can in order to avoid a heavy heart.

  1. This morning I had a sparrow light on my porch as I was sitting there. It hopped almost to my toes–it was close enough for me to reach out and touch it–of course, I didn’t try. It seemed very brave/unafraid. Next it hopped over beside my chair and sat there with me for a short while, then over to the corner and perched on the rake. It didn’t move or fly away when I stood up to go in…I even walked over to it to make sure it wasn’t injured (it wasn’t or didn’t seem to be) and it stayed put. It has since left my porch and now I am trying to figure out what kind of omen that must have been. This is the second sparrow to visit me so close in 2 years. The first one I actually rescued after it flew into the windshield of the (parked) car. I have read that they are an omen of death, if they enter into your home–but neither sparrow did and no deaths have occurred. Also that they are lucky for lovers. Any ideas/links are greatly appreciated!

  2. We discovered a sparrow in our house this morning. We let her go through a open window. Needless to say, our cats enjoyed our short-term guest! LOL

  3. I was praying to the Godess a few days ago… asking her to show me how to have clear skin and inner happiness, and a sparrow flew right up to my window and sat on my balcony, chirping away in a friendly and rather direct manner! I found this site and it makes so much sense as to why I recieved this particular visitor and air element of mother earth… thankyou so much.

What a beautiful way to say that indeed, the visit of the Sparrow can hold true so much more than an omen…

For some reason, after contemplating my next turn on my path, the word sparrow popped into my head. Unsure where this will lead, but I am here to find more. And have… what a wonderful Beltane message from the Goddess I have been given. Thank you for this sight, and you INsight as well. Blessed Be…

  5. There has been a sparrow stalking my home for 3 days. He has been persistently trying to come in through the window, knocking on the window with his beak while he hops along the window sill. What’s his message? What shall I do?

  6. Hello again,

Little sparrow is still on my window sill. I have tried to feed him, even let him into the house. I have searched the area to see if there’s a fallen nest or egg or an injured fellow sparrow but to no avail (thank goodness). However, this little bird is still there knocking on my window and fearless if I approach him. He serenades me at 6:45 a.m. and then heads home at sunset. It’s been 4 days straight now. Does anyone care to share some insight?

    =)

  7. Hi Mary,
I can’t tell you what to do about the sparrow, physically….I’m not a habitat specialist or vet or anything like that.
I can, however, encourage your awareness to move back to the symbolic imprints the sparrow implies.
For example, here are some thoughts: http://www.whats-your-sign.com/sparrow-meaning.html
Off the cuff, your experience reminds me of trust. Trust in faith, in all things leading to a higher road, trust in self, trust in your environment.
As I’ve also written, the sparrow reminds me of our carbon-footprints, and your little houseguest may be asking you to take a more bold stance in your actions to leave this world a better place….if that makes sense.
Then again, sparrows also speak to me about simplicity, and experiencing joy in the most basic experiences.

  8. hello..this morning about 1 am we were sitting here and out of no where a sparrow appeared in our apartment..there was no way it could have gotten in from outside there was no windows or doors open..we are all lil freaked out from this..the sparrow would fly from one side of the room to the other..from the side that my fiancee was sitting at to just above my head then back.. we opened the backdoor and let him out..

  9. last night we had a sparrow on our deck. I was able to pick it up and he sat on my hand and let me pet him. I got a box, made a “nest” and supplied food and water. He stayed in the box all night and slept. This morning we checked on him and he was there for another hour or so, then flew away. Any ideas?

  10. Can someone tell me what it means if a sparrow flyes into your closed window just in front of you. The sparrow seems to have recovered and flew away later.

  11. A friend of mine found a dismembered bird on her doorstep. We think it’s a sparrow, but the only parts that were there were the wings, a foot, and the heart. Each of the parts look as if they were cut with precision and expertise. There was no pool of blood or any other remains anywhere around the house. Looking out from the door step, the parts are arranged as such: closest to the door, the heart with aorta on the bottom; next, an inverted foot; and finally, the two semi-folded wings, arranged on either side of the foot and heart. Any thoughts on this?

  12. I’ve been looking over meaning of many recent and distant symbolic moments in my life out curiousity to seeing if my instinct about them were close to the general meaning to ancient texts. The most precious was when I stumble upon a frail green sparrow. Before that moment I took the time to have 3 days to myself to heal from a fever and after 3 days when the swine flu was dominating Queens NY. After an interview I bumped into a friend that convince me to join mutual friend and go to parties that night. I ended up alone wandering the streets to enjoy the sunrise and decided to walk in my favorite street. 2ave and 2nd street I was walking with a little haste. Enjoying the freash air that morning brought and stopped myself calmly at one point realizing a green sparrow just a couple steps from me. Amaze of the color, never seeing one of that color before in the city. (later my friend recently told me he saw a few at a big park, Pelhem Bay Park in the Bronx). I grab a napkin and carried out of the path of the side walk and put it by a tree humming softly to it that it is going to be okay. I trust that it will do better there. I left in fear that with me gazing over it would leave it in a state of shock preventing it to heal. So I walked off to the empty morning streets to find an old close friend of mine with a tattoo of gypsy on his wrist that knew of my prior condition. He came up to me and told me I looked horrible and I should go home and rest. I laugh but knew that all this had greater meaning. I went back to bid thanks to the sparrow hoping it was okay I return and it was gone. I wanted to remember that moment of enlightenment so I made a symbol off the top of my head. Being that it was 5/22 and I was 22 years old I saw that the numbers importances, quickly drew the number 22 with one 2 facing the other making a bird.I went to a nearby tattoo shop and got my 1st tattoo in the exact color of the jaded green it posses. It has been 2yrs since and I’ve been as bless as I’ve always been with good and bad to grow from. With the special meaning close me that continues to grow in meaning. Thank you Avia for being a messenger/translator.

  13. This morning my mother woke me to help her get some birds out that made their way into our living room. She had gotten two of them to fly out the windows but the last kept fluttering about and wouldn’t go towards the window. She came to me and asked me to help her. She blocked off one of the entrances and I approached from around the corner. It fluttered a bit as I got close but eventually calmed down. I raised my hand to it and it perched on my left index finger and allowed me to carry it to the window but it did not fly off until I lightly shook my hand. My mother is quite concerned as she believes the superstitions of sparrows symbolizing death. Any insight into this occurrence would be of great help. Thank you.

  14. We are in the process of selling our house and had people coming today. I went out front to sweep the side walk and came upon a sparrow that must have hit the window. He was alive but his head was tilted backward which made him doe flips in my hand and it seemed like his right claw was paralyzed. I held him petting and talking to him. Soon after he died in my hands. Any meaning to this?

  15. I was setting in my livingroom as I sat on the couch a sparrow walked into my home and walked up to me about 2 1/2 ft away, looked at me for a moment then turned around and walked back out..is this bad luck…I cant find anything about a bird walking in and back out??

  16. I have had four birds land on my window and hold on to the screen as they peer inside at me. This has happened over the last 8 days. I just started working on a project with a woman for whom I have great affinity. I think this project could change our lives and take these visitations as a good omen. What are your thoughts?

  17. Hi. I have recently seem a white sparrow twice. Was wondering if it had a spiritual meaningredients?

  18. For the past 4 days ive had a sparrow fly in thru my window. 4 sparrows, 4 different days! It freaks me out and eventually flies out the door after circling around. The one today landed on the kitchen curtain rod then went out the door. My uncle died this past week and his funereal was yesterday. I couldn’t bare to go. Im wondering is this some how connected? If not whats its meaning for coming every day?

  19. now i know why that sparrow is always infront of my window its propley a sign of christinna and/or my house mate protecting me and saying i shuld continue using my creativity

  20. How would the meaning of looking through the window and seeing 2 sparrows sitting together on my external window shade bars right in front of me be interpreted?

  21. My dad died a month ago and a sparrow flew in my house today as I was walking in the house after church. It wasn’t in distress. It flew under my son’s kitchen chair, ate some crumbs and flew back outside. Could it be a visit from my dad (he was close to my son), a bad one or simply a bird flew in my house?? Hmmm.

  22. Yesterday morning my son brought home a sparrow fledgling. Today my cat brought a sparrow adult and my son and I witness his death in less then 1 min.

    Please help me understand this?

  23. Yesterday was my mother’s birthday. Bought a cupcake in her honor. But the traffic was horrendous to get home. Decided to park on a side street for a moments for road relief. After sometime, a sparrow decides to fly into passenger side window of my car, perch on my dash; chirping away for about 20 seconds. Staring right at me, look out the windshield then back to me; chirping. And flew out the driver’s side window. It was quite a surprise, my dog, though in the car, did nothing. No bark, not a peep! I was grateful for the visit. Very cool!

  24. I have praying for my son’s freedom from what is holding back, and a sparrow flew into my house, tried to get out but was cornered and I gently guided it away from the corner, then it flew back out the door.

  25. A memory from years ago- I had my children seated at the table when my dog wished to come in from the backyard. As I opened the door, a sparrow flew in ~over the children’s heads and into the living room. It was Christmas season, so we had an (imitation) tree up. I tried to help it go outside- but my dog was terrifying it- so uncertain where the sparrow had landed – I directed the children to pay it no mind- as it was dark out- at this time- and I was unable to flush him out. In the morning, I found him sound asleep in the Christmas tree! Now that it was daytime- and the dog was placed outside and the children were still asleep- it was easy to open the door and out he went! A most adorable little Christmas visitor- I enjoyed his sweetness while sleeping perched in the tree, so much!
