Interpreting Symbolic Meanings More Clearly

Interpreting Symbolic Meanings
Interpreting Symbolic Meanings

I get questions about interpreting symbolic meanings all the time.

Recently I was asked how to interpret impressions more clearly.  Specifically, the questioner wanted to know how she could more clearly understand and interpret extra-ordinary impulses she picked up on.

I offered a few tips with the focus on interpreting symbolic meanings more clearly:

1) Bring yourself into the present moment and self-observe.  The practice of self-observation (self-awareness from a “third person” objective, awareness of breath, observation of thought without judgment) somehow re-organizes the mind in such a way it allows for fluidity in psychic channels…those areas of the mind that are mystical.  I’ve had phenomenal success with this technique.

2) Work with yourself to find a personal codex.  What does this mean?  In order to interpret on an intuitive level,  we would fair better if we had a framework of standards – a decoder.  The Tarot is excellent for this.  Creating a personal set of symbols that hold specific meanings for you allows for comparison against extra-sensory perceptions and your personal symbolic codex.  This comparison winds up being a method of translation between ethereal perception and symbolic concretization (a more whole understanding).

3) Take your time.  Move slowly, consciously into each moment.  Profound meanings (of any kind) are tucked in the “in-between” moments of our lives.  When we slow down, we can peek into those special in-between spaces and find vast interpretations laid open for our knowing.

  1. To remind people of the wisdom to be found in self-observation is a very meaningful thing. I have known people who turn to tarot for answers when they do not realize they already hold these answers themselves. It is a question of nurturing faith and developing trust.

  2. To build on my previous response, I would also like to say that anything a person chooses can be meaningful along a path to deeper self-discovery. Tarot can act as a tool to encourage you to expand on your perception. Whatever captures your attention is quietly labelled in your mind and explored in ways you are ready to believe. As people learn to watch what happens between their thoughts, whether ideas get stronger, weaker or gather momentum, then this shows how your consciousness is evolving. What you hear or do not hear, whichever sensations focus your attention, are localizing your energy for specific reasons. We need not always think of specific words to describe our observations. An inner knowing can pinpoint what matters without the need to translate all the time.

  3. Hi Liara,
As always, timely & laser-focused advice for people who would have it. I particularly like the language you use…”watch what happens between thoughts.” and “localizing energy.” Words can be so powerful, and I love your use of language to paint your ideas.
    Namaste
