Iguana Thoughts

Iguana Thoughts

Like everybody else I know, sometimes I just feel like a rag that’s been wrung dry.

Too many deadlines, too much obligation, and too much (self-inflicted) stress and worry.

Thankfully, I have a home remedy for these moments.  I mosey out to my sun porch  wherein my six foot iguana wanders freely.

Why is Spike such good medicine?

Because she reminds me to squeeze the charm out of every moment in life.

She looks out into the world with deep wonder, and appreciation for everything she is experiencing.  Observing her reminds me to do the same.

Iguana medicine is powerful stuff.  It’s like taking a dose of simplicity.  A measure of this Rx puts us in a state of simple joy for the lovely things around us.

Warm sun, fresh air, good food, fine music, a great book, flowers blooming, pleasant company, birds singing,  shade trees, running water – real basic stuff we can all tick off our appreciation check-list.

That’s what iguanas do.  They revel in the simple pleasures.  Each moment in the warmth of the sun is a gift.  Every Johnny Mathis tune is an unexpected pleasure (Spike loves Johnny Mathis), every mouthful of banana - an exquisite treat.

I’ve written more about Spike, and the amazing symbolic lessons she’s shared with me over the years.  You can read all about Spike and her wisdom here.

Chrysanthemum Meanings

Chrysanthemum Meaning

Chrysanthemum Meaning

In the Chinese culture, the chrysanthemum signifies a life of ease. Buddhists are fond of using this flower as offerings on alters. Symbolic of powerful Yang energy, this flower is an attractant of good luck in the home.
As a personality type, (in general, or specifically if born October 23 – November 21, Scorpio) the chrysanthemum indicates there are  many layers to you, and just as soon as someone thinks they have you identified, you pop out with another blossom of surprises. You like clarity and honesty in all things.

In fact, when situations are murky or unhealthy you are the perfect sign to come in and clear the air or heal the situation. You are focused and tend to be serious in your emotions, but you are deeply intuitive and help others identify areas they need to work on for their own emotional growth. You are active and amorous with no end to suitors

In the Victorian language of flowers (where certain flowers were unspoken code, allowing subtle language to be expressed without speech):

Yellow chrysanthemums meaning: gently declining amorous advances.
Red chrysanthemums mean: a proposition, invitation to ignite a new relationship
White chrysanthemum: tell the truth, be honest, a request for udder candor
Violet chrysanthemum meaning: a merry wish for wellness

In Eastern meditative and Ayurvedic traditions the chrysanthemum is associated with the heart chakra.  A common practice is to focus on the beauty of the chrysanthemum with a goal to blossom the beauty held within the heart….stimulating the heart chakra.

Some chrysanthemums are perennials: A symbol of returning focus, reoccurring themes, perennial wisdom.

Chrysanthemums that are annuals: Reminders of the cycles of life, impermanence, and the value of seizing the present now.

Dreaming of chrysanthemums indicates an unfolding of the inner self, during a tumultuous time of life.  More specifically, it may represent a time of deep personal growth forged by hardship or conflict.  The result leading to a stronger, more realized self.

Venus Symbol: A Meditation

Venus Symbol Meditation

Venus Symbol Meditation

The Venus symbol  is an effective meditational tool for law of attraction purposes because its symbol (shown left) can be utilized to focus desired intent into common reality.

The symbol is perfectly poised for this purpose because it is comprised of the circle and the cross.

The circle represents the womb of desire

The cross represents the path to manifesting that desire into the physical.

Additionally, Venus the planet as well as the actual (Roman) goddess and all her consorts, visages harbor attributes such as: Love, passion, desire, harmony, unity, creativity, imagination, fertility.

All these attributes focused, serve as a fine beacon for lighting the energetic path in moving dreams into reality.

The Symbol Meditation:

See the Venus symbol in your minds eye.

Visualize your highest intentions and desires living within the circle (womb).  View these desires swirling in the orb of the Venus symbol, and being nurtured in the kind of love Venus (as in the goddess) can provide.

Within the orb, your desires are drenched in a luscious flavor of love and life-giving nectar.

After a time of churning in a Venus love bath, see your intentions moving down into the cross-section of physical manifestation.

Consider the cross as a message that says “X marks the spot.” This is the destination of your finest ideal – this is where love-infused intent drives its claim into your physical realms.

See your intent at the cross-hairs of your focus.  Right in the center of the cross lands your desire, full, fleshed and realized in this physical reality.

I’ve used this technique with surprisingly effective results.  The key is to imbue your thoughts with that wholesome, appreciative vibe (the goddess) Venus reflects.

More on the Venus symbol, including other tips that may assist this meditation can be found on my Venus symbol page here.

Vulture Meanings and Nonconformity

Vulture Meanings and Nonconformity

My eyes first opened to various vulture meanings as a kid visiting my Uncle Dan in West Texas.

He lived on sprawling acres of sun-baked dirt and craggy trees with crooked fingers pointing into the skies.

Vultures were never far from sight at Uncle Dan’s place.

I learned to love these bizarre creatures for their regal poise and imperial presence.   And isn’t that a paradox.  I mean, sonnets aren’t written about how beautiful and elegant the vulture is.

And that’s my first (maybe most important) symbolic point pertaining to vulture meanings.   The vulture is what it is, and could care less about what you or I think about its appearance.   It moves with grace in the skies.  On land it moves with authority, as if all things are within its rightful ownership.

There’s a lesson here for the image-conscious.  When the vulture flies the skies of our awareness it’s a clear sign to raise our heads with dignity.  Conventionalism be damned along with conformity and status quo.

Vultures will also talk to us about expectancy and being confident in the knowlege our needs are always met.  “Good things come to those who wait.” Very good things if you’re a vulture, and they’re quite content with waiting for hours to get their fair share of resources.

In fact, I’ve seen the same group of vultures hang in air currents for hours.  Just circling and riding the coursing winds.  Very knowing. Very Zen. As if to say “my freedom is in scaling the skies; all things come to me in good time.”

Actually, vultures say nothing. They have no hoots or hollars.  Only hissing.  Vultures don’t need to announce themselves.  They’re reputation preceeds them.  Their power is in their purpose.  Their silence only enhances their mystery.

There’s profound wisdom in silence.  When the vulture lurks about in our awareness, it’s often a sign to keep our lips sealed.  Usually in situations where it would behoove us to keep our opponents guessing about our motives.  Build intrigue.  Build suspense.

Quite a manner of living, and the vulture is a great symbolic role model for us to follow. Indeed, the vultures’ way is an art form.  Perhaps they even have a motto that might go something like:

“Rail against the common and customary.  Bliss out whilst hang-gliding in the high, bright skies. Rest in the unquestioning knowledge that all needs are laid at my feet.”

There’s tons more vulture meanings for the picking (pardon the pun).

These and many more questions are answered in my symbolic meaning of vultures page here.

Tarsals and Trying to be Cool

Toes, Tattoos and Ego

Toes, Tattoos and Ego

Nobody asked about it, and I’m willing to bet a fair piece nobody ever will. But, I noticed a typo in a symbolic video feature.

How am I supposed to correct one wrong word in a 2 minute video without some kind of magic white-out (you know, Liquid Paper)?

To explain, I misspoke in my symbolic video featuring thoughts on the symbolic meaning of hands.

I talk about duality, and loving the sight of tattooed hands – like when my buddies tattoo “love” and “hate” on their tarsals

What the hell is a tarsal?

Well folks, a tarsal is a toe bone.

Would that mean I have buddies with tattooed toes?  No.   Well, maybe I could….but I don’t ask my buddies to go whipping their socks off to appease my curiosity.

It means I have just enough knowledge of medical terminology to be dangerous and appear frightfully thick.

If I wanted success in my attempt to appear cool and everso-too-clever, I would have used the term carpals.  Specifically, metacarpalsHere’s a neat diagram.

Personal symbolic epiphany for today:

Don’t let slight-handed trickery of base-self behavior intrude on sure-footed progress of the authentic Self.”

Indeed, you are correct Ms. Crow , every day really is a winding road.

Falling (literally) for the Meaning of Finches

Falling (literally) for the Meaning of Finches

I’ve been asked several times for the symbolic meaning of the finch

Usually birds speak brightly to my perception. Their feathery gifts of wisdom unfurl on a clean slipstream of communication.

Oddly, Finch chose not speak to me.   No amount of stillness, meditation or asking would coax oracular song from the finch.

Hindsight revealed the silence was due to a funk I’ve been in lately.

Finches will not tolerate glum.  No way.  They don’t go there.  They don’t even know where Glum-land is.

It took me falling off the roof  to open the channel of communication with the finch.

After landing in a soft heap of shrubbery, I burst into (fringing on insane) laughter (for life-affirming reasons that should be painfully obvious).

And that’s when the finches flew overhead.  Early in the season for my region too.

They were like little bright missile rockets of joy…surging with energy, bounding for landings offering the promise of a bright new spring.  High-voltage reminders of the continuity of life (including, thankfully, mine!).

It became clear to me, in that moment after the fall (no, my life didn’t flash before me) there is, indeed, a greater-grander picture and it’s totally imperceptible when viewed from the land of Glum.

So, if you’re stuck in Glumdom, I invite you to read my full post on our symbolic finchy friends here.  They’re bound to blast you into a better mood!

Carnivorous Plants and Devouring our Dreams

Carnivorous Plants Symbolic Meaning

The longer I walk the symbolic path, the more it becomes evident that everything is up for interpretive grabs, including, of all things, carnivorous plants.

When I’m impressed with something consistently, more than once, I know there’s prized meaning in my midst.

These special carnivores came thrice, each appearance serving as a new layer of awareness.

First in dreams (prime awareness), next in meditation (observing awareness), and lastly, I saw a pitcher plant in an ancillary exhibit whilst visiting the museum last week (physical awareness).  See the gradual surfacing of presence in multi-layers of consciousness?  Cool, yes?

So where does the symbolism come in?

At first, I reasoned I was the fly because I’d been entertaining some really base thoughts lately (small, pesky, primitive, consumptive).

The first of the year had me “all a-buzz” over some grandiose propositions.  Since then, my mind was as askew as the flight pattern of the fly,  zipping in and out of possibilities (often leading to a complete lack of focus).

It turns out, those propositions were all smoke & mirrors. All illusion.  All hype.

So, symbolically I had succumbed to the sticky sweet siren call of the carnivorous pheromones. I got lured in by an illusion. Lulled into the bowels of the digestive juices of the pitcher plant.

I got consumed by the bile of a dream that was not what it seemed.

Pretty depressing.

However, the concepts of “dreams” and “illusions” kept knocking on my psyche’s door.  Closer inspection revealed there were never any flies or insects in my dream, meditation or physical experience.  Why should I add insect symbolism to the symbolic message if they had not even been presented?

So, I dove back in. Into the intoxicating wiles of the carnivorous plant realm for more meaning.

Epiphany: The plant is the dream.

Consider.  Carnivorous (as all) plants are closely aligned with water; the element  of dreams, imagination and emotion.   Carnivorous plants are masters of wild, dreamy presentation. Their entire design is built on exotic foundation.  Otherworldly.  Extraterrestrial, almost.

Fodder for the dreaming mind.

These plants typically catch their snacks (insects, primarily) by emitting wooing scents, shimmery bling, and psychedelic charm. They are irresistible.

The call of our dreams is irresistible too.  You know what I mean.  We all have a dream.  It beguiles us. Calls to us. Charms us.  The call of our dreams is as irresistible as the narcotic-like trappings of the carnivorous plants.

But, like these plants, our dreams can be wicked in their demands.  It’s not enough to be lured in by the dream.  The dream needs to be fed

And our dreams will not tolerate fluff for consumption.  No way.  Like the pitcher plant, our dreams need meaty sustenance.  Real food.  Protein.  The stuff that builds hearty growth and strudy foundations.

If not fed properly, our dreams can consume us.  Indeed, some carnivorous plants ingest themselves. Self-cannibalization. Tasty.

I find it curious I keep honing in on a specific carnivorous plant, the pitcher plant – who is also known as the “pitfall plant.”

And that leads me to some parting symbolic impressions about carnivorous plants:

  • Avoid “pitfalls” by identifying the dream,
  • nurture it,
  • feed your dream REAL food,
  • and let the dream charm your socks off
  • (just don’t be cannibalized by it).

Wikipedia has a nice article on carnivorous plants (here) if you’re interested.
