Chakra Colors. A Palette of Meanings

In my neck of the woods, the earth is in her springtime transition – pulling away from winter and building momentum into the urging new life warmth promises.

It’s a great time to talk about the subject of color meanings ,  because it’s all about transition. Plus, spring is a time when color returns to our sight in special ways. Consequently, it can be a phenomenal time for spiritual growth and understanding.

When I experience in colors, I use the chakras as a meaningful template for deeper understanding.

Just as colors share energy in order to complete their value, so too do the chakras. Each chakra is unique, but never separate. Each lends value to the other.

When we look at the spectrum of colors, it’s easy to see how the colors progress, and deliciously morph into each other. All the colors dance in and out of each other to create new colors, new depths, and new meanings.

For example, blue could never be blue if it had never held hands with yellow, or green. It’s all a dance in which all the colorful dance partners share the beat of life.

And it’s the subject of value that’s prompted me to write this page on chakra color meanings. It drives this point home: Everything is connected and lends value to everything else.

Keeping to that same premise, we can build extraordinary connections between the mundane and the mystical.

What do I mean by that?

Another example: When spring unveils her presence with fresh violet crocus jutting up from the earth, it’s akin to an awakening. The color violet corresponds to the crown chakra, which also represents an awareness and blossoming.

By connecting with the awakening violet crocus, our violet crown chakra is awakened. This elicits an internal dawning – a vital crowning as we situate ourselves into a new awareness.

I continue this line of thought with this page on Chakra Color Meanings.

Opinions are like Toppings

Opinions are like Toppings

I get a lot of questions.  Between this blog and my website, the volume of questions is mind-blowing (no chunk-spattering yet, but a brain explosion is surely eminent).

Most questions (I’d say 95%) boil down to one thing:  “What does this mean?”

My answer (although often packaged differently) is the same today as it was the day I went public with my brand of symbolic interpretations five years ago:

“What does it mean to you?”

I figure my job is to offer background information so that you can come to your own conclusions of symbolic meaning…conclusions that best suit your needs, personality, and life-experience.

Consider the pages you read here and on my website  as food for thought.

Better still, my symbolic interpretations are like toppings on the pizza pie of your perception.  They are accessories.  Enhancements.  They can add flavor to your point of view.

Conversely, if you don’t like what I’m saying, like an anchovy, you can pick the little booger off your pie.

Come to think of it, every other opinion outside your own should be viewed as a pizza topping.  You wouldn’t put stuff on your (literal) pizza pie you wouldn’t want to eat.  Why would you listen to crappy ideas about an oracle in your experience, or the symbolic meaning of an animal totem?

I’m forever driving this point home in my writing: “The best interpretation is your own.”  Everything else is subject to your judgment

Take what you want.  Use the stuff that feeds your soul.  Chuck the stuff that tastes icky to your spiritual palette.

Happy chowing.

Energetic Circuitry

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

A friend of mine responded to a video post about the symbolism of hands (you can read her comment here), which prompted me to wax philosophically about energetic circuitry.

My friend D~, the author of When Isis Rises and also the master mind behind Sapphokinesis will have the honor of being in the presence of her Spiritual Mother, Amma Sri Karunamayi, this weekend.

D~ has thoughtfully observed Amma, and expressed curiosity in her etiquette concerning giving and receiving with hands.

Specifically, Amma’s preference is for an offering to be extended by the giver from the right hand. If the giver forgets, and offers an object to Amma with the left hand, she will gently, lovingly correct – encouraging the offering to be extended with the right hand.  This, from a woman who doesn’t speak much really.

What does this have to do with the symbolism of hands, or with energetic circuitry for that matter?  Plenty.  And here’s why:

electriccircuit

Do you remember this experiment as a kid?  This one really blew me away in spiritual terms.  It opened up my awareness about connections, and how energy flows in a circle (the term circuit is derived from circle).

Awareness of that pattern of energetic flow can open up some superior opportunities to enhance, and even channel energy.

I can’t speak for Amma Sri Karunamayi, but, I’m willing to bet she has an intimate understanding of how energy moves from person to person.

I’m suspecting she is one with the knowledge that each human is a powerful generator, with currents of energy streaming from each of us like gloriously divine batteries.

In order for the light bulbs to remain bright, the currents to stay fluid, and the connections to be at their keenest – we must move with the natural flow of energy.

Continuing the analogy of energetic circuitry the connection of human-to-human energy would look like an electrical current with a circular energetic pathway similar to the above-shown illustration.

Being mindful of which hand is used can augment the transmission of energy.  Just by being aware of how the flow of energy works, allows it to behave more powerfully.

Here are a few symbolic attributes pertaining to hands that might further illustrate what I mean by augmenting the flow/transmission of energy:

Left Hand Right Hand
Passive Assertive
Justice Mercy
Lunar Solar
Emotion Logic
Receiving Giving
Unconscious Conscious

The simple act (or, more accurately, being aware of the act) of giving with the right hand and receiving with the left has eliminated (what I once viewed as) countless blockages for me.

I think it has everything to do with allowing the current of energy to flow through its natural courses.

When we dance with the undulating motion of etheric forces, we participate in a grand ball, and we are moving to an energetic concert played by the universe.

Butterfly Bits

In the course of my work, I answer a lot of questions and unfailingly, the answering causes my own awareness to peek out over the molehills of my own minutiae and crest to a higher view.

It has to do with the adage that goes something like “in service, you save yourself.” Well, something like that.

Anyway.

I got a question from Tracy: “I recently found a butterfly with only one wing and its body still attached to it. What does that mean?”

What does that mean? I think it’s a great question, with valid answers.

My advice to Tracy is to first identify what the meaning of butterfly is to her, and then go from there.

For example, if the symbolism of the butterfly speaks of transition, her butterfly bits might translate to mean something like:

  • Transition interrupted
  • Halfway through the changes
  • Need more resources to complete the transition

If the meaning of the butterfly speaks to her of freedom, flight or migration (as butterflies do), we might intuit the mutilated butterfly to mean:

  • Grounded. Travel is on hold.
  • Delay. Regroup and reconnect your wings.
  • Limitation. What’s holding you back?  What’s missing?

The 1/2 equipped butterfly talks to me of a change in flight pattern (linking the butterfly theme of transition and mobility together).

Of course, these are only my perspectives.  Tracy will have to mine the meanings for herself.  Something about this 1/2 winged butterfly body she found really spoke to her – and that, in itself, demands attention.

When situations speak to us, no matter how small they seem, they are our clues into deeper knowing.  These are our signs.

Repositioning Emphasis on Memory

Repositioning Emphasis on Memory

Repositioning Emphasis on Memory

I have CRG, “can’t remember guano,” or CRS if you prefer the more vulgar expression of excrement.

I admit, I have a crap memory.  Always have.  Maybe always will.

This used to enrage me.  I’d get positively rabid over not being able to retrieve details from memory.

Several years ago I started keeping a mini notebook in my back pocket at all times.  This helped control some of the anxiety and helplessness I felt at not being able to pick out memories at the fingertips of my mind.

In fact, my other websites and this blog is a macrocosm of the micro-notebook idea.  I started these virtual archives as a record-keeping tool so I could retrieve and reflect upon my symbolic experiences.

Over time, my “impaired” memory didn’t seem like such an impairment any more.  In fact, my state of memory became symbolic of some pretty cool aspects:

  • A propensity  to stay in the present moment
  • An ability to overlook limitation
  • Acceptance of what is

Further, I came to realize my Swiss cheese memory is actually an asset in my intuitive work.

Why?  Because memory is a filter.  The mind takes what is sees now, and constantly compares it with past experience.  It’s human nature.  With a less-than-perfect memory, I’ve got fewer comparative filters to contend with.

This really allows my intuitive impressions to roll.  Consequently, my interpretative services and the symbolic insights I write about are more authentic, unfettered and fluid.  This offers unique value for my clients and readers.

So, I’m sharing this as an invitation to reconsider your personal quirks.  Reposition your emphasis on an aspect of yourself you once considered “impaired” or “faulty.”  Flip the aspect over to consider its benefits.

It’s a new spin on old advice.  As Johnny Mercer put it “Accentuate the Positive.”

Building Values. Life Imitating Art

Building Value

Building Value

Those of you who follow me on Twitter know I attended a drawing class at a local community center last year. Yes, this little teapot (short-and-stout) is my handy-work.

After showing her my first homework assignment, the instructor looked at my work and said “not bad, but you need to build on your values more.”

Each consecutive week, she gets increasingly animated in her encouragement: ”Build your values! Build your values!”

From what I understand, the term ”value” in the art world defines the depth or intensity of light and dark in your pencil sketch.  And, different values are identified with various labels like highlight, shadow core or middle grey.

I find a curious (and symbolic) correlary here, that while I’m building my values in art class, I’m also doing the same thing in my current reality.

I’m not talking about moral values.  I’ve already got loads of those, as do most of us.  We all know the golden rules, and how to apply them to our lives.

I’m talking about building depth, intruige and character in the portrait of our lives.

The symbolic analogy gets more charming when we learn building value in pencil sketching is accomplished by adding layers.  We begin with a light shading with the pencil, and continue to add multiple layers of shading to build the darkeness (or, augment the lightness) of an area.

There are no shortcuts to the layer process either.  When I’ve crammed my pencil in an area to beef up a darker value, it looks like crap.

That’s true in life too.  Cramming and short-cuts just don’t make the grade as elegantly as progressive/thoughtful building.

Experience, growth, learning, observation – all of these and more are layers we’re applying to our life, and they most likely illicit artful expression when added accumulatively and with sincere/mindful application.

More layers = more diversity.

More diversity = more depth.

More depth = more value.

Naturally, it takes time to build layers.  It’s an investment; a devotion to building integrity with a goal to enhance value.

What kind of value are you building in your life?

Take a look at your life as if it were a black and white pencil sketch.  Can you identify the highlights?  The shadows?

Consider the various experiences, beliefs and perspectives that layer your life.  Those elements in your experience that build up to offer value, depth and intensity.

In the “big picture” of your life, are you layering a foundation for higher, beneficial vision?

These are just some of the questions that cropped up for me while my instructor flails her arms and animatedly urges me to “Build your values!” I thought I’d share them with you.

Spiritual Adaptors and Finding the Right Fit

Spiritual Adaptors

Spiritual Adaptors

I live in a 132 year old house, and all the electrical outlets are those 2 slot kind. It seems every electrical device I own is 3-pronged, so I’m forever grabbing an adaptor to allow my 3 prongs to fit in my 2 hole outlets. This got me thinking about spirituality. There are adaptors available to us to assist us in getting more connected and allowing our spiritual energy to flow more freely.

We can seek out spiritual adaptors in the form of:

  • prayer
  • service
  • meditation
  • communing with nature
  • consulting a spiritual practitioner

These are just a few examples of spiritual adaptors.

It’s the responsibility of each of us to find the right adaptor for our needs.  We must ask ourselves: “What tools are best utilized to serve my highest good, and allow my energetic current to flow most effectively?”

For example, I serve as an appropriate adaptor for certain people. Over the years, I’ve found a specific personality is drawn to me. Certain people come to me with very specific symbolic questions they want help in clarifying.  I’m the perfect adaptor for these people – we plug in together beautifully – our energy flows together just right.

On the other hand, we can sometimes reach for the wrong adaptor when seeking spiritual clarity.  A few poor adaptors I can think of offhand are drugs and abuse.  These adaptors either cut off energetic flow, or worse – cause backlash in the form of short circuits, and electrical fires that can spiritually damage us.

Whether we approach spiritual leaders for advice, or adopt practices for spiritual development, it’s important to seek an adaptor that “fits just right” with our needs.

Last word: Be wary of “one size fits all.”
