All too often we take the sparrow for granted – small though she may be, she is certainly powerful. It is her slightness in size that gives her advantages. She reminds us we do not have to have the big stuff (cars, house, etc.) to be important, and we do not have to have the loudest voice in order be heard.
Some symbolic meaning of Sparrows include:
- creativity
- simplicity
- joy
- protection
- friendliness
- community
- productivity
Sparrows derive power from their numbers. Always in a clan, they move in clusters, eat in clusters, and are always content as such. This can be quite intimidating to some would-be predators. Safety in numbers is a lesson the sparrow has to share with us.
The sparrow is vigilant in her goals. She is always bustling for her food, foraging for her nests, and gathering for her young. Fastidious and productive, the sparrow is a reminder that idle hands (and idle minds) should be avoided in order to live a full, healthy life.
She is a master of flight, and camouflage, and as such the sparrow teaches us to use our creativity to get around in life – think outside the box, and be creative in solving our problems.
As an air animal totem, the sparrow speaks of higher thoughts and ideals. She beckons us to keep our burdens as light as we can in order to avoid a heavy heart.

This morning I had a sparrow light on my porch as I was sitting there. It hopped almost to my toes–it was close enough for me to reach out and touch it–of course, I didn’t try. It seemed very brave/unafraid. Next it hopped over beside my chair and sat there with me for a short while, then over to the corner and perched on the rake. It didn’t move or fly away when I stood up to go in…I even walked over to it to make sure it wasn’t injured (it wasn’t or didn’t seem to be) and it stayed put. It has since left my porch and now I am trying to figure out what kind of omen that must have been. This is the second sparrow to visit me so close in 2 years. The first one I actually rescued after it flew into the windshield of the (parked) car. I have read that they are an omen of death, if they enter into your home–but neither sparrow did and no deaths have occurred. Also that they are lucky for lovers. Any ideas/links are greatly appreciated!
Hi Lindy,
This is beautiful, and your observations as so eloquent. I am glad you found this post and it has been helpful.

Namaste,
A.
We discovered a sparrow in our house this morning. We let her go through a open window. Needless to say, our cats enjoyed our short-term guest! LOL
I was praying to the Godess a few days ago… asking her to show me how to have clear skin and inner happiness, and a sparrow flew right up to my window and sat on my balcony, chirping away in a friendly and rather direct manner! I found this site and it makes so much sense as to why I recieved this particular visitor and air element of mother earth… thankyou so much.
A small grey sparrow was in our basement this morning, it is snowy and winter out, but I let her out and she flew off…I have also heard they are omens of death…
Finches, sparrows and other small birds were used as sensors, indicating if oxygen conditions were safe for humans in potentially toxic locations.
Specifically, these birds were recruited in old mining expeditions in which the bird was lowered in a cage into deep caverns. Upon raising the cage, if the bird was alive the crew had the assurance to continue with the expedition. Deceased, the bird indicated unfavorable conditions and the miners would find alternate routes. This is one source explaining the “omen of death” label.
Further, I have seen a sparrow give its life to indicate a warning for its feathered clan. No other sparrow will go near a fallen member as it indicates (again) trouble or danger (a sign or omen) of death nearby to anyone foolhearted enough to follow the same path as its fallen kin.
On a lighter note, you’ve turned a cheek against this somber side of sparrow symbolism.
By freeing your little grey sparrow, you’ve set free the potential all mornings hold, and the promise of spring is made whole in the freedom beating in the heart of your sparrow visitor.

What a beautiful way to say that indeed, the visit of the Sparrow can hold true so much more than an omen…
For some reason, after contemplating my next turn on my path, the word sparrow popped into my head. Unsure where this will lead, but I am here to find more. And have… what a wonderful Beltane message from the Goddess I have been given. Thank you for this sight, and you INsight as well. Blessed Be…
Howdy Melala, thanks for your contribution….sparrows are such great catalysts.
There has been a sparrow stalking my home for 3 days. He has been persistently trying to come in through the window, knocking on the window with his beak while he hops along the window sill. What’s his message? What shall I do?
Hello again,
Little sparrow is still on my window sill. I have tried to feed him, even let him into the house. I have searched the area to see if there’s a fallen nest or egg or an injured fellow sparrow but to no avail (thank goodness). However, this little bird is still there knocking on my window and fearless if I approach him. He serenades me at 6:45 a.m. and then heads home at sunset. It’s been 4 days straight now. Does anyone care to share some insight?
=)
Hi Mary,
I can’t tell you what to do about the sparrow, physically….I’m not a habitat specialist or vet or anything like that.
I can, however, encourage your awareness to move back to the symbolic imprints the sparrow implies.
For example, here are some thoughts: http://www.whats-your-sign.com/sparrow-meaning.html
Off the cuff, your experience reminds me of trust. Trust in faith, in all things leading to a higher road, trust in self, trust in your environment.
As I’ve also written, the sparrow reminds me of our carbon-footprints, and your little houseguest may be asking you to take a more bold stance in your actions to leave this world a better place….if that makes sense.
Then again, sparrows also speak to me about simplicity, and experiencing joy in the most basic experiences.
hello..this morning about 1 am we were sitting here and out of no where a sparrow appeared in our apartment..there was no way it could have gotten in from outside there was no windows or doors open..we are all lil freaked out from this..the sparrow would fly from one side of the room to the other..from the side that my fiancee was sitting at to just above my head then back.. we opened the backdoor and let him out..
last night we had a sparrow on our deck. I was able to pick it up and he sat on my hand and let me pet him. I got a box, made a “nest” and supplied food and water. He stayed in the box all night and slept. This morning we checked on him and he was there for another hour or so, then flew away. Any ideas?

Can someone tell me what it means if a sparrow flyes into your closed window just in front of you. The sparrow seems to have recovered and flew away later.
